Grooming Your Norfolk Terrier

Maintaining the characteristic weather-resistant coat.

The Norfolk Coat

The Norfolk Terrier has a distinctive short, wiry double coat that is naturally weather-resistant. The coat consists of a harsh, wiry outer coat and a soft, dense undercoat. Proper grooming maintains the coat's texture and protective qualities.

Hand-Stripping

Hand-stripping is the traditional method of grooming Norfolk Terriers and is preferred for maintaining the coat's proper texture and color. This technique involves plucking dead outer coat hairs by hand rather than cutting them with clippers.

Benefits of hand-stripping include:

Regular Maintenance

Weekly Brushing

Brush your Norfolk at least weekly to remove loose hair, prevent matting, and distribute natural oils throughout the coat. Use a slicker brush or pin brush for best results.

Bathing

Norfolk Terriers don't require frequent baths. Bathe only when necessary, typically every 4–6 weeks or when the dog gets particularly dirty.

Nail Trimming

Trim nails regularly, typically every 3–4 weeks. If you can hear nails clicking on the floor, they're too long.

Ear Care

Check and clean ears regularly. The dropped ears can trap moisture and debris, so keep them clean and dry to prevent infections.
